CARAVAGGIO'S MEDUSA

I spent about a year in Italy, in 1995-1996. I was 21, in art school at Temple University's Rome campus of Tyler School of Art. I had a studio lungotevere, Arnaldo Di Breschia. I would walk to school trying to fit in with the fashionable Italian ladies, to the market for a paper bag of fresh figs, the museums full of rich ancient artifacts, Trastevere with a glass jug of wine. I learned the most from 16th century painter, Caravaggio. He was an outlaw, rebelling, painting his friends and lovers as main characters in religious paintings for the church. He also painted Bacchus, the God of wine and parties, as well as the severed screaming head of Medusa. The portrait of her, was painted from life, her likeness painted from the handsome face of his partner at the time. I was looking for a Caravaggio image to do a mastercopy in body paint, and decided on this one. My homage, to the blacklisted Caravaggio, and also to the Italian body painters, who are the new renaissance in a country known for it's rich art history. Va Bene!
